I changed into my sneakers and then went down to the sixth floor. Sebastian was already there, lunging and reaching his arm into the air. I couldn’t help finding his warm-up—or the fact that he was warming up—adorable.

“Ready?” he asked. I nodded.

Sebastian started running at a leisurely pace. I could tell it was as easy as walking for him, by the way his feet barely left the ground and his breathing stayed silent. So I picked up the pace. When I did, Sebastian met my eyes and grinned. “Ah, I see how it is,” he said, quickening the pace even more.

And then we were racing around the track, maneuvering every now and then around shocked-looking walkers and little kids. I was breathing hard, and Sebastian was exerting some effort too, his breathing now audible. His calf muscles and perfect form made it obvious that he was a track runner. When non-runners run, they often go out at too fast of a cadence, their heels making heavy and inefficient imprints on the ground. But when runners run, their footsteps are silent; their feet hit the ground at a perfectly even pace. Their arms do just as much work as their legs.

The sounds of deep breathing and light footsteps filled my ears as we circled the boat once, then twice, then three times. Running had a way of calming me down, resetting everything, making me just focus on my breathing and my footwork. The track was the one place I didn’t overthink everything in my life. Like what I was doing with this boy. Like how soon this cruise would be over. Like the fact that Logan was gone and always would be.

After the fourth time around, Sebastian came to a stop and then pulled me into him. “Ew, I’m disgusting,” I said.

“I’ve never been so attracted to you,” he breathed into my mouth. The words and the sensation of his lips on mine sent an electric shock straight through my body.

He placed his forehead against mine and smiled. “Let’s go cool off in the pool?”

“Mm-hmm,” I murmured, unable to form any real words.
